Businesses, Kids Tout Manufacturing Jobs in Videos

by Rudy Miller | Lehigh Valley Live

Did you know there are more manufacturing jobs in the Lehigh Valley than there are skilled employees to fill them?

Or that the average manufacturing job carries an annual salary of $68,000 in Pennsylvania?

The Manufacturers Resource Center of Allentown wants you to know manufacturing jobs are in demand and require skilled employees to fill them. So they enlisted the help of middle school students across Pennsylvania to spread the word.

The organization hosted the "What's So Cool About Manufacturing?" video contest. Thirty-one teams paired with local manufacturers to shine a spotlight on local industry.

"Our students have learned a lot about 21st century manufacturing and the kinds of jobs available right here in the Lehigh Valley through this program," said Erik Everett, a technology education teacher at Wilson Area Intermediate School.

His team won the award for overall excellence. Northampton Area Middle School got the award for most online votes cast. The winners were revealed Feb. 28.

More than 100,000 votes were cast this year, the fourth straight year for the contest.
