KitchenAid’s Key Ingredient: Investing in Workers. ‘It’s Not a Dead-End Job Anymore.’

Jennifer Hanna would be a dream hire for the many companies wrestling with talent shortages these days. Having worked in factories since 1991, she is responsible for more than 1,000 people building KitchenAid stand mixers that sit on countertops around the world. Ms. Hanna, though, has worked for KitchenAid’s owner Whirlpool Corp. WHR 1.88% since she was a high-school graduate figuring how to pay for college. It would be hard to lure her away. The appliance giant helped pay her way through community college and Ohio’s University of Findlay, then handed her increasing responsibility, encouraged her pursuit of an M.B.A. and put her on KitchenAid’s senior leadership team. As the U.S. labor mark

That includes northwestern Pennsylvania. "The awarding of this competitive POWER grant speaks volumes abou

Green Purchasing Power: Sustainability is Major Factor

The world’s biggest businesses cut 633 million metric tons of CO2 from their supply chains after a decade of purchasing power brings sustainability up the corporate agenda, according to a new report by the CDP. The research finds that for some big buyers, sustainability is now a major factor in their purchasing decisions. Nearly three quarters (73%) of a subset of 27 major purchasers said that they are either currently deselecting, or considering deselecting, existing suppliers based on their environmental performance. In addition, 63% are either currently using, or considering using, data from CDP disclosures to influence whether they contract with suppliers or not. This is in stark contras

Talkin' Bout My Generation

If you're a member of the Baby Boomer generation or Generation X, chances are you have a markedly different view of the U.S. manufacturing industry than Millennials. A recent Manufacturing Index survey by Leading2Lean, a manufacturing software technology company and creator of CloudDISPATCH software, found that generation significantly affected how Americans view manufacturing careers, the role of manufacturing in the U.S. economy, and the industry's growth. Respondents were asked if they agreed or disagreed that manufacturing jobs are important to the U.S. economy. Older generations, particularly those born between 1946 and 1964 (Baby Boomers), and those born between 1965 and 1980 (Generati

A Quarter of All U.S. Jobs Are at High Risk of Being Automated, Report Finds

A full quarter of all U.S. employment is highly vulnerable to automation, a new report from the Brookings Institute finds. That’s the equivalent of 36 million jobs. Meanwhile, some 36 percent of U.S. employment—52 million jobs—will “experience medium exposure to automation in coming decades.” While the remainder of U.S. jobs are likely to experience only low levels of automation, the report finds that “Almost no occupation will be unaffected by the adoption of currently available technologies.” That’s not quite the tagline I’d give the chart below—I think I’d go with “Most jobs are reasonably-to-very susceptible to automation,” but hey. These findings aren’t particularly shocking, but the re
